2. What we do
Probative is a research firm that records what AI answer engines say about companies and projects in public disputes, and the sources the engines cite. We compare each answer with the public record, such as court filings, rulings and permit decisions. Where an answer is wrong or out of date, we help the company publish accurate, sourced material.
1. What the engines say. We put the questions people are likely to ask about your dispute to the main AI engines, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews. Every answer is recorded with its date and the sources it cited.
2. Checked against the record. We compare what the engines say with the filings, rulings, decisions and reporting in your dispute. You see which answers match the public record, which are out of date and which conflict with it, with the sources behind each one.
3. Correcting what’s wrong. We help you publish accurate, sourced material on your own sites and through the correction routes that engines and publishers offer. Everything we help publish names your company as its source. We can’t promise an engine will change its answer, but we keep checking and you’ll see whether it does.
3. Likelihood and confidence
Every judgment in our reports uses one of seven terms, from “almost no chance” to “almost certain,” and each term has a fixed range of probability. Our confidence in the judgment is stated separately and depends on how strong the evidence is.

4. Received a Read from us?
A Read is a short report on what AI engines are saying about one company during a live dispute. We send Reads without charge to the people at a company best placed to judge them, usually the general counsel and the head of external affairs. No one paid for yours, and we don’t publish Reads or send them to anyone outside the company.
5. How we work
One side at a time. We don’t act for both sides of a dispute at the same time. What a client tells us in confidence is never used for anyone else.
Fees are fixed before work starts. The fee is agreed in writing before we begin, and it doesn’t change with what we find. We turn down work that asks for a particular conclusion.
Your material. Once you engage us, anything you send is kept confidential and used only for your engagement. We tell you which tools it goes into, and we return or delete it when the work ends.
Probative was founded by Alastair Macartney, a former British Army Major who ran the UK Ministry of Defence’s Defence Courier Service from 2007 to 2009. DCS moves classified material around the world, and did so with a zero error rate during his tenure.
